First children‘s tournament of the season at the Dragons

On Saturday the 10th of September, the first U14 tournament of the season took place at the Düsseldorf Dragons. Despite the rain and the flooded pitch, 26 players showed up to face each other for a game of rugby.

As no club could provide the number of players to make up a full team, we decided to have one full game with composite teams. The first team included players from both the RSV Köln and the International School of Düsseldorf (ISD). Players from the RC Aachen and the Düsseldorf Dragons made up the second team.

The game started quite balanced at first, but soon turned in favour of the RSV Köln/ISD team who won the match after three halves with a final score of 56:10.

Although the game was tough and the weather conditions did not help either, the players enjoyed competing in their first game of the season very much. For some players coming up from the U12, this game presented a surprise. It was their first game at U14 level on a bigger full-length pitch and against physically more developed players, thus a significantly more challenging experience. Nevertheless, they all enjoyed the experience and learned a lot.

The game was followed by the traditional "third half" for all players and parents to enjoy a good time together in our clubhouse before going home.

The day after, again the rugby pitch of the Düsseldorf Dragons was to become the theatre for rugby matches between many teams in the U8, U10 and U12 age groups. A total of 154 players from Köln, Bonn, Aachen, Münster, Essen, Solingen and Düsseldorf participated in the first NRW children's tournament of the season.

The young Dragons started their season very well putting in some good performances during their games. At all age levels, the young Dragons showed some very good actions both in attack and defence and succeeded in scoring some wins.

It is worth noting the performance of our U10 team who managed to finish first in their pool phase, only conceding a total of 4 tries. They went on to play a final match against a strong and experienced BTHV Bonn 1 team. Their commitment in defence, strong tackles, good work rate and fast attack moves allowed them to win this tough game 4 tries to 2. The final result allowed the U10 Düsseldorf Dragons to proudly win their first tournament of the season. Congratulations to the whole team for this great achievement!

On the side of the pitch, our organisation team made sure that all participating players, trainers and supporting parents could enjoy their time at the Dragons with sausages, burgers, cakes, ice cream and drinks, which seems to have been highly appreciated, considering what was left over at the end of the day 😉.

We would like to take the chance to thank all parents who have been involved in this tournament's organisation, all trainers who brought and managed their teams during the day, as well as the referees who allowed all games to be played safely and fairly. Your support made this day for all participating children one to remember.

We are looking forward to the next tournament.
